Review: Good Kid - an incredible energy, live at Chalk, Brighton

On the 2nd stop of their UK and EU ‘This Can’t Be The End Tour’, Good Kid wowed fans at Chalk in Brighton with a fantastic showcase of their indie rock talent. The Canadian band’s set contained a range of songs from across all 4 of their EP’s, from their first release to their latest, and also included songs from their album coming out on the 27th of September. With an energetic attitude and segments from fans to get involved, the show was a massive hit.

Opening for Good Kid were indie band Dutch Criminal Record. They were an amazing opening act, warming up the crowd with a range of their songs made up of powerful vocals and upbeat guitar. In addition to their set, they included a rendition of a cover of Chappell Roan’s ‘Good Luck Babe!’ which I’m pretty sure every single member of the crowd sang along to. The band had a great set and I will be listening to their music in the future!

The beginning of Good Kid’s set perfectly curated the scene and energy for the entire show. It was a display of energetic and fun performances which got the crowd up, dancing, and shouting out the lyrics. In particular, during the song ‘Tell Me You Know’, the crowd was extremely loud, most definitely letting the band know that they knew the lyrics! With other songs such as ‘Bubbly’ and ‘Slingshot’, Good Kid gave the Brighton crowd an electric experience with their rhythmic guitar, stunning vocals, and awesome visuals.

Part-way through their set, the band introduced a fun interactive segment which they like to call the ‘Wheel of Chaos’. With their motto being “embrace the chaos”, they explained how they like to switch it up for a song or two during each show, with the band doing whatever the wheel tells them to. Options such as singing a sea shanty, playing a song without the lead vocalist Nick, and Nick playing a fiddle were included. An audience member was brought up onto the stage and spun the wheel on behalf of the crowd. The option that it landed on brought upon one of the most impressive feats in music that I have ever seen. Good Kid was to sing their song ‘Faster’, however every time that the word ‘faster’ was mentioned (a total of 19 times within the song), the speed of the song would increase. The performance of this was insane and I genuinely found myself looking on in awe at the band’s talent and skills.

I also wanted to quickly emphasise the talent that Good Kid has as a band showcase. Their range of songs and abilities are incredible, in particular the lead vocalist Nick Frosst, who not only sang, but also played the trumpet and the fiddle (which was the first time the band had performed live with a fiddle) at different points throughout the set. It is an awesome thing to see a band with such adaptability.

Continuing with their set, Good Kid performed many more upbeat and melodic songs. I particularly loved how energetic and bouncy they were; I mean this both literally and theoretically because not only were they playing very upbeat music, but they were also jumping up and down and all over the stage which was very fun to watch. During the song ‘Dance Class’ the band brought another audience member onto stage to dance alongside them. Likening it to an awkward school dance they told everyone to let loose and encouraged the crowd to dance also. Another key moment of audience participation, and possibly my favourite of the evening, was a part of the encore during one of the band’s slower songs ‘Madeleine’, where the entire crowd was repeatedly singing the lyrics “I’ll go wherever you go”. The sound echoed around the entire venue. It, and the moment, was entirely magical, along with the performance itself.

Good Kid’s penultimate song was their vastly popular cover of ‘From The Start’ by Laufey. It is an incredibly electric and upbeat rendition of the song which had the whole crowd dancing, and one that features regularly on multiple of my playlists. The band ended their set with ‘Mimi’s Delivery Service’ which provided the crowd with the perfect energy to close the night, before leaving the stage amongst an array of applause and cheers.

I would most definitely recommend Good Kid and their music to anyone who is a fan of rock and indie music. Their energy and talent are extremely impressive, and I look forward to seeing all of their future projects! If you would like to see Good Kid on the UK and EU leg of their ‘This Can’t Be The End Tour’ you can catch them touring until the 3rd of October, with tickets on sale now.
